3 States of Matter
Last week and this week, we are learning about the 3 states of matter. The kids spent last week learning about each state by making a flip book collage of solids, liquids and gases they found in our classroom magazines. We also had an interesting fun with food making Root Beer Floats because they contain all 3 states of matter. We will also be experimenting with the three states this by having students make investigate balloons filled with each of these states. We will how to change from one state to another.
Our vocab words for the week are:
Matter
Mass
Volume
Solids
Liquids
Gas

Christopher Columbus
This week, we have been studying Christopher Columbus in honor of Columbus Day on Monday. We learned what tools explorers need, the names of the 3 ships Columbus had (the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria) and what Columbus discovered (the new world). For sensory group today we made Sensory Soapy Ocean Foam. It is a fun easy project that can be done at home. I am attaching directions in case you would like to do them at home. Also for Fun with Food Friday, we made Columbus ships sailing in a jello ocean cup. It was so fun and tasty as well. Have a great 3 day weekend and remember no school on Monday for Columbus Day.
Ingredients for Ocean Foam
1/3 cup of water
1/3 cup of Dawn dish soap
1 tbsp of cornstarch
1 big bowl
1 hand mixer
Directions:
Mix all ingredients into a big bowl and mix first on low then move to high setting on hand mixer.
Then Play and enjoy!

Five Senses

Our 5 Senses

Next week, we are studying our first science unit! OUR 5 SENSES! The five senses are a great topic of study to start with because students get to explore how their body works to help them learn and grow. We will be doing experiments using our five senses including sight games, hearing tests, guessing by smell and identifying objects by touch. There is no limit to the fun we will have. On Friday, I will be giving the students a quiz on the five senses to use for our science grades, so please review vocabulary words with them and ask them about their senses.

Community
Hello Everybody!

This week, we will be continuing our unit on COMMUNITIES. Students have already been focusing on vocabulary words like community, citizen and transportation. Last week, we learned what it means to be a good citizen and things we should not do in our community. We even made traffic light cookies for Fun With Food Friday to ensure students understand the importance of following traffic rules. This week, we will continue to learn those vocabulary words and discuss more of the communities we are apart of whether it be our home community, our classroom community or Fort Lee's community. We will remember that communities have rules and go over the rules in our classroom community by making a list of do's and dont's in the classroom. We will study signs we see in the community and discuss the importance of following street signs directions.

This week for homework, I am going to ask that each child brings in a few pictures of people in their home community. During social studies on Friday we will have time where the kids will be able to talk about the people in their pictures. This will help the children to see that not all home communities are unique and important. Have a great week and hope to see you on Thursday September 17th at Back to School Night. .
